Day 96-16th October – Broome

October 18th, 2011

Today we got up early and went on a tour. We drove for about 2 hours on dirt road and arrived at Beagel Bay church. When we were in the church a Beagel came out that belonged to the priest. The church was made of pearl shells.  When we came out of the church we had morning tea. Then we dropped the others on the tour at the Cygnet Bay pearl farm and we went mud crabbing. I was with dad and the man who did the tour. We got one crab. Mum and the others were with an aboriginal lady and they didn’t get any. Then we had mud crab for lunch. The aboriginal ladies cooked it on the fire. I liked the mud crab but Harry and Emily didn’t. So they had a bread roll and chicken.  Then we picked up the others from the pearl farm tour and went to One Arm Point where we went to a hatchery. We bought two shells there and there were lots of animals. There were baby and adult turtles. We also saw Nemo and barramundi.  Then we went to Cape Leveque beach where we went swimming and collected shells. Then we went to the west beach and had afternoon tea and an ice-cream and watched the sunset. After that we drove back and went to be because it was 9pm.

We then went for a walk on Cable beach. A nice big white sandy beach.

October 14th, 2011

Today we went to the pool first at the caravan park with Kiko and Harry's friends and Asia. After, we did some school work. Four lessons of school work. Then we went to get the flat tyre fixed. We thought we'd be here for a week waiting for it to come from Perth but it arrived today. While they fixed it we went to the shops. We got a pair of swimmers for Emily and me, ballet flats for me and Emily, a dress for Emily and me and 2 t-shirts for Harry. Then we took the car back and they said you need to bring it back in tomorrow, so we went back and went to the beach. It's called Cable beach and it is in the top 5 beaches in the world. We walked down the beach right down to the water. Then we went back to the caravan park and Emily is playing with her friend and I'm writing on the blog and about to play on Moshi Monsters.

After we had a swim with Kiko and Harry's friends we played with the dive sticks and played with the football. Then we had to get out because the other boys were fighting and we were as wrinkled as prawns. Mum did lots of work and we did no schoolwork. It was fun. That night we went to see the staircase to the moon. It was the reflection from the moon rising on the mud flats. It was wonderful. We had dinner at the markets on the beach. There was a store that sold rock flutes. The man taught me how to play one of the flutes but we didn't get one.

Then we went to the RFDS (Royal Flying Doctors Service) and donated the money that Harry and I had raised by playing the didgeridoo. We made $22.50. Then we saw a boab tree jail. A boab tree is a tree that’s really fat and it could have been a thousand years old and they used to lock people in it. When we finally arrived in Broome we went for a swim. After the swim, Harry and I went for a bike ride and found the mini golf course. It was cool. There was also a restaurant there. I tried to get into my emails but my password and log in wouldn’t work. It’s much cooler here. It’s dropped from 40C to 30C.

Today we went on a Geike gorge tour. We drove to Geike gorge. Most of the boat trip was shaded by the limestone cliff faces. So it was nice and cool most of the day. I could barely hear what the man was saying. We saw lots of freshwater crocodiles. Then we drove to Derby. When we arrived dad and I went to the tyre place but they didn’t have a tyre the right size.  So we went back and had lunch. We found the people that we’d seen at another caravan park. Then we tried to go to the RFDS but they were closed so we went and watched the sunset over a boab tree.  We had a look at the jetty and it was high tide. Derby is famous because it has the second highest tides in Australia. The difference between high tide and low tide can be 12 metres. Then we went back and Harry, Emily and I made dinner. Well mostly me. Dad helped too. We had pasta and mum and dad had Thai green chicken curry. For dessert we had creamed rice with fruit.

It took us about half an hour because dad started jacking in the wrong spot.  Once we were done we put the old tyre on the back and went to Windjana gorge where there were lots and lots of March flies and it was really hot. We walked up the gorge. We only did half of it because it was too hot and the flies were biting. We spotted about 6 crocodiles and lots of birds. They were freshwater crocodiles. There were also lots and lots of bats that smelt really bad. Then we drove to Tunnel Creek. We had to walk through lots of lakes that were really deep. We had to take torches because it was dark like a cave. On the way out, mum nearly stepped on a Western Brown Snake. Then we went back and went for a swim.

We were going to go in a helicopter but they said that it was too smokey and we wouldn’t all fit in one helicopter. When we arrived at the caravan park we went for a swim in the pool then we went to the restaurant there and for dinner we had pizza.

Today we drove back to the van after our camping trip. Our nice bouncy beds and air-conditioning were waiting there for us.  We left Home Valley early and drove to El Questro. We had a look at the different gorges but we didn’t do any of the walks because it was already 40C. We crossed the Pentecost river and drove on dirt roads most of the way. When we got back to the caravan park it was still very hot so we went for a swim. We saw a big bold perenti (goanna) that went into the pool area and walked around.

Today we got up early and went fishing with the man that owned the cattle station we were staying at. We drove for ages to get to the place where they caught the bait. We caught mullet for bait. Then we drove some more to get to the place where we went barramundi fishing. We fished there for an hour and a half and caught nothing. We went back to the place where we caught the mullet and fished for another half an hour and Harry caught a barramundi. Unfortunately it was too small to eat but we got the camera and took a picture before we threw it back in. After another half an hour, we decided to give up and get on the road to Home Valley Station.  When we arrived at Home Valley station we went for a swim and Harry, Emily and I played on the playground while mum and dad pitched the tent. Then we went back and got dressed and went to the Dusty Bar and Grill where we had dinner. I had fish and chips, Harry and Emily had nuggets and chips, Dad had spicy chicken (that wasn’t all that spicy) and mum had pasta with prawns, scallops and crocodile.
